Original Items. Only One Group Available. This is a very interesting original Imperial Japanese Army WWII dog tag and personal ephemera group, centered around a soldier’s identification tag with partially legible unit markings and accompanied by a varied assortment of small personal, patriotic, and military items.
From what we could translate on the dog tag, the right line reads 撃 ? 一 二 一 〇 〇 - 12100. The middle line reads タ- TA - katakana syllable. The left line reads Left line: 番 二 一 - Number 2 1. As best as we can tell, it’s a unit serving in the Philippines, but due to the stylization of the characters, we cannot translate it further. This will be a good research project for someone with the time.
The rest of the group includes:
- Small national Japanese flag on tiny pole, looks to be silk. 5 ¼ x 8 ¼” with 10” pole.
- Small checkerboard set with Axis and Allied powers on board, with some pieces inside.
- Some Japanese currency.
- Various rank insignia.
- Two medal brooches and a full 1937-1945 China incident medal.
- Japanese compass.
- Broken Japanese compass.
- Japanese razor.
- Various other small bits as shown.
The combination of the partially translated Army dog tag, miniature Japanese national flag, patriotic checkerboard set, currency, rank insignia, China Incident Medal, medal brooches, compasses, razor, and assorted personal effects makes this a particularly varied grouping of Imperial Japanese military material. The unresolved dog-tag markings offer the strongest opportunity for further study and may ultimately provide a more specific connection to the soldier or unit represented by the group.
