An artillery observer usually accompanies a tank or infantry unit. Spotters ensure that indirect fire hits targets which those at a fire support base cannot see.

Fantastic hard to find WWII Japanese military 25x2º degrees NIKKO artillery spotting telescope. The number on the monocular scope is 1814., though other markings are obscured by oxidation and paint flaking. The large eyepiece is marked for magnification power 25 X 2º. It measures W 6" x L 20" x H 4".
