Original Item: Only One Available. This is a beautiful classic Imperial German WWI Hesse Presentation sword, with very faint etching and a great scabbard. It conforms to the Model 1889 standard quite well, with a straight thrusting blade, and a basket hilt guard. The presentation version is of course quite less robust than the cavalry issue, and these were privately purchased, so there is no acceptance marking on the spine.
The guard is partly "fold-away", and that portion also bears the seal of the state of Mecklenburg on it. The guard shows some very minor oxidation. The grip is molded bakelite or gutta percha, in great shape. The leather blade buffer is still present, and in good shape.
The 32 7/8” blade of this example is in fair condition, with very heavy oxidation that has made the etching nearly impossible to see. The only marking is the double trademark "King's Helmet" (Ritter-helm) alongside a "Kings's Head" (königskopf) over W.K. & C. logo of legendary German maker Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie of Solingen. This company is a famous manufacturer of military swords and cutlery in Solingen, Germany - a city famous since the middle ages for its metal-working and craftsmanship in sword making.
The steel scabbard has a single hanging ring, as the second fitting was for a hook on the hanger. There is some heavy denting and wear to the plating as shown. There is also a leather strap attached at the guard, likely originally a sword knot.
Overall condition is very good. Ready to display!
