Original Items: One of a Kind Set. During the "Great War", military dogs played important roles on both sides of the trenches. They were used to pull machine gun carts, locate the wounded on the battlefield, and even to help keep rats out of the trenches, a constant problem. Most importantly, they were used to deliver messages along the front.
Here we have a very nice Imperial German Canine Message Tube, attached to a leather dog collar. The tube itself measures 5 1/8” long by 1 1/2 inch in diameter, made from sheet zinc with brass bands with loops. Through these is threaded a dog collar about 5 inches in diameter, with the 100 year old leather delicate and worn. This is the first example we have had of one of these extremely rare items!
Along with this is a photograph, almost certainly a reprint, of a British Soldier removing a message from the tube on a captured German messenger dog. The rear of the framed photograph has the following text explanation:
SECURING ENEMY MESSAGE
The British official photo shows a German canine messenger being captured within the Allied Lines. A British Signalman is in the act of taking the enemy message from the container about the dog’s neck.
11/8/18
The frame measures 10 5/8"W x 8 9/16"H x 1/2", and has a hanging wire on the back.
A fantastic and rare set, which would make a great addition to any "Great War" collection.
