Original Imperial German WWI Prussian Dark Blue Artillery or Pioneer NCO Visor Cap - Dunkelblau
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of an Imperial German NCO Visor Cap (Schirmmütze), in the early 20th Century Dunkelblau (Dark Blue) color. The later M1907/1910 version would move to the Feldgrau (Fieldgray) that was seen mostly during the war. The cap constructed of dark blue wool, which was the standard color for all states except for Bavaria, which used their own blue color. It has Ponceaurot (poppy red) piping, and a Schwarz (black) velvet cap band, indicating issue to an Artillerie (Artillery) or Pioniere (Pioneer) high ranking NCOs, per corps color reference materials. This color was also used for Verkehrstruppen (Transport Troops). The cap is identical to the Officer version, except that the shape is more "relaxed". The front of the cap has a nice visor, which looks to be made of vulcanfibre.
The front of the cap bears the correct Tri-Color Reichskokarde, with the black and white Prussian state kokarde (cockade) below it. The interior is lined with very nice black silk or rayon, with a leather sweatband. There is no maker marking that we can see, but it was most likely bespoke, so often there wouldn't have been one. Size is approximately a US 7 1/4 (58cm).
Condition is very good, with colors well retained, and just a few areas of moth damage. The front visor does show wear and deterioration, with the usual checking and cracking from age, and is a bit loose from stitching deterioration. The interior lining is very nice, though the sweatband has lost some portions, and is now somewhat delicate, being over 100 years in age.
Quite attractive and ready to display!
