  • Original Item: Only One Available. First instituted in 1867 with the formation of the  North German Confederation, the Black, White, and Red Tri-Color was in use as the National Flag of Germany for over 50 years.  In 1871 it became the official state flag of the German Empire, and continued in that role until the dissolution of the empire in 1918. It was then brought back from 1933-1935 during the NSDAP rule of Germany before being replaced by the more recognizable NSDAP flag used until 1945.

This banner flag, which we assume was hung vertically, measures 52" tall and 46" across, with a folded over header at the top. It is made of three separate pieces of fabric sewn together, and is fairly close to square in appearance, so it may have been reduced in size. While there is no way to confirm when it was made, we believe this is a WWI era flag based on the age toning and canvas construction. This flag is in very good used condition, with the usual age toning and some dirt and staining on the body. Holes can be seen in the header where it was hung for a time.
