Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good original Imperial German WWI Model 1889 Prussian Infantry Officer Sword, or Infanterie-Offizier-Degen Modell 1889, manufactured by the well-known Solingen firm of Alexander Coppel. The sword retains its gilt brass folding guard with Prussian eagle, Kaiser Wilhelm II cypher, wire-bound grip, nickel-plated straight blade with double fullers, original leather blade buffer, and black-finished steel scabbard with single suspension ring.
The nickel plated straight blade is in very good condition and has a double fuller on each side and is 32⅛” from the spear point to the hilt. The nickel plate is retained very well. The overall length of the sword is 37 3/4”. The leather blade buffer is even retained!
The reverse ricasso is stamped with the scales trademark with the firm's initials, ACS interspersed, denoting manufacture by Alexander Coppel & Co. located in the legendary "City of Blades", Solingen. This well-known firm made blades for Germany for many years before and after WWI.
The steel scabbard has a single hanging ring, as the second fitting was for a hook on the hanger. It has the standard black enamel finish, which has worn off a little bit in some areas. There is some denting, but it is overall good.
The Model 1889 infantry officer sword was closely associated with the visual identity of the Prussian officer corps during the final decades of the German Empire. Its combination of the Prussian eagle, Wilhelm II cypher, folding guard, and straight double-fullered blade distinguished it from the curved cavalry and artillery saber patterns used by other branches.
With its Alexander Coppel ACS scales trademark, Prussian eagle folding guard, Wilhelm II cypher, wire-bound sharkskin grip, 32 1/8-inch nickel-plated double-fullered blade, surviving leather buffer, and black single-ring steel scabbard, this is a strong representative example of the Prussian Model 1889 infantry officer sword from the Imperial German and WWI period.
