Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice WWI Imperial German Model 1889 Infantry Officer sword and scabbard, made by Pack, Ohliger & Co. GmbH of Solingen, offered in good condition. The D shape fold-away guard with the Imperial German eagle of Kaiser Wilhelm II has a black finish to it. The grip is brass wire bound over a celluloid base, with a brass cypher of the Kaiser in the center. The celluloid is in excellent shape. This model of sword has a leather forefinger loop on the inside of the guard, and has good stitching and condition of the leather.
The nickel plated straight blade is in very good condition and has a double fuller on each side and is 30 1/2 inches from the spear point to the hilt. The nickel plate is retained very well, however unfortunately some person, not understanding that this is a dress blade, ground the edge a bit in a few places, which is a shame. These were never intended for actual use. Overall length of the sword is 37 1/2 inches. A red buff felt washer is fitted to the blade where it meets the guard.
The sword ricasso is stamped with the trademark "Young Siegfried Wielding a Hammer" logo over P. O & Co., the markings used by Pack, Ohliger & Co. GmbH, Waffen - und Stahlwarenfabrik of Solingen, the legendary "City of Blades" in western Germany. This company was founded in 1910 by Friedrich Pack and Robert Ohliger and manufactured weapons and Steelware during the WWI Period. The company ceased to exist in 1922 when Ohliger left, and the company was taken over by Pack's son Ernst and his sons, forming Ernst Pack & Sohne, who continued to use the same "Young Siegfried" logo. This puts the sword FIRMLY in the WWI period. For more information please see J. Anthony Carter's find work GERMAN SWORD AND KNIFE MAKERS.
The steel scabbard has a single hanging ring, as the second fitting was for a hook on the hanger. It has the standard black enamel finish, which has worn off in some areas in the middle, and the underlying steel has oxidized. The scabbard is mostly straight, though it does have two dents on one side in the middle which do not interfere with placing the blade in the scabbard. The blade does move slightly in the scabbard
Overall condition is very good. Ready to display!
