  • Original Item: Only One Available. We've all seen items like these in the hands of the drum majors of marching bands, and often call them "batons" or other terms, but they are correctly referred to as a "marching mace." These are used to command marching formations, helping the soldiers keep in step, and to direct the marching direction.

This is a great example of an Imperial German marching mace, bearing the colors and insignia of the Kingdom of Saxony, one of the major states of the German Empire. This style was typically produced between 1780 and 1870,  and remained in use up into the WWI era, after which the nobility of the German Empire was  done away with. The mace has an overall length of 52", with the Wooden portion of the staff measuring 34", with a brass tip of 10", and a 6" ferrule towards the top.

The mace's "head" is about 3 1/2" wide x 2" long, and has a pewter plate on top, which has an 8 pointed starburst bearing the emblem of the Kingdom of Saxony. A Saxon green/white faded cord is wrapped around the staff and secured with brass loops on the lower tip, and through the staff via 2 brass plates 14" from the top.

Condition is very good, with a great patina on the brass components, and the wood in lovely condition. There is some fading to the colors of the cord it is wrapped with, but that is to be expected, being over 100 years old. Most impressive and ready to display!
