  • Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This is a very interesting example of a World War One helmet which went through some trauma from shrapnel damage. The helmet has a small entry hole in the top front, and a large exit hole in the back. The helmet is somewhat of a relic with some heavy material loss in spots across the helmet. The interior is extremely oxidized. The helmet is missing both the liner and chinstrap.

The helmet still has both the dome headed chinstrap retaining rivets, which hold the interior pickelhaube style chin strap lugs in place. It also retains both of the extended ventilation side lugs, which are the correct short version without a step for the larger size 66 shell. This would ensure proper installation of a Stirnpanzer brow plate regardless of shell size.

The exterior shows remains of several layers of paint, likely added after the war. The majority of the helmet is bare steel now. The jagged steel at the impact holes is now very weak from the material loss.

Due to the heavy oxidation, the size and maker stamp is now gone, along with the rolling mill mark. There are no questions about its authenticity, however. From the lugs, we can tell this helmet was either Size 66 or 68.

An interesting shrapnel-damaged helmet, ready for display.
