  • Original Item. Only One Available. This is a scarce example of the Model 1871 German Artillery Short Sword in its original matching scabbard, which has been issued and reissued three different times with new unit markings, and the original frog. The sword has a brass hilt and the characteristic "S" cross guard with fluting to the grip on one side.

The blade is maker-marked with a logo we are familiar with, a crown over a shield with a "Z" inside. This would later be the mark of Clemen & Jung, but per J. Anthony Carter's Fine Work GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS, this mark was originally used by H.W. Lang of Solingen, who registered it in 1851. However, in 1866 Lang transferred his business to his son-in-law Hermann Neuhaus, who then formed E. & H. Neuhaus with his brother Ernst, who traded until circa 1890. It was not until 1898 that the trademark was registered by Clemen & Jung. Definitely some interesting research potential here.

The unit marking on both the scabbard and crossguard read:

    11. R. H. 150

We believe this indicates issue to the 10th (1st Hannover) Field Artillery Regiment "von Scharnhorst", 150th man. The back of the scabbard and the frog bale have unit markings that were crossed out when the sword was reissued. The original leather scabbard is in good shape but has shrunk a bit over time, so it doesn’t fit completely over the sword anymore. The original leather frog is unmarked but is in fair shape with all stitching intact.

A great example of a scarce sword, the first of its kind we have offered. Comes ready for further research and display.
