Original Items: Only One Set Available. This is an attractive Imperial German WWI-style pilot’s flying helmet with an accompanying set of early flying goggles. The helmet appears to be a private-purchase example and retains its complete chinstrap, buckle, adjustment straps, and snap fasteners marked PRYM / 4.

Before the introduction of enclosed cockpits and standardized flight equipment, early military aviators relied on privately purchased or commercially produced leather and fabric helmets to protect them from wind, cold, oil, and debris. These helmets varied considerably in construction, and many were purchased directly by the pilots rather than issued through a standardized military supply system.

The Imperial German Army aviation service was known as the Fliegertruppen des deutschen Kaiserreiches during the early years of WWI. In October 1916, the various military aviation organizations were reorganized under the name Luftstreitkräfte. The air service operated aircraft, observation balloons, and airships in support of the German Army, with reconnaissance and artillery observation forming its earliest and most important duties.

This helmet is complete with its intended straps, snaps, chinstrap, and functional buckle. The construction is consistent with the type of close-fitting soft flying helmet worn by aviators during the early period of military aviation. It remains in lovely overall condition, with expected age, handling wear, surface marks, and minor deterioration.

PRYM was a well-known German manufacturer of metal fasteners and press studs. The markings support German manufacture, although PRYM continued producing snap fasteners long after WWI, so the snaps alone cannot conclusively establish the helmet’s date. No other manufacturer’s marks, ownership names, issue stamps, or dates were located.

The chinstrap remains complete and the buckle functions correctly. The various straps and fasteners remain present, giving the helmet a particularly complete and convincing appearance when displayed.

The included flying goggles are currently unidentified and have no visible maker or issue markings. They have threaded or screw-mounted lens frames designed to allow damaged lenses to be removed and replaced, an important practical feature on early aviation goggles.

The goggles are fitted with elastic straps that meet at a buckle at the rear. The elastic and attachment points show substantial deterioration from age. The straps on one side have separated where the old adhesive failed, but the material itself is not torn at that location and could potentially be carefully repositioned by an experienced textile or leather conservator.

Each side originally had three attachment straps. The lowest strap on both sides is now completely missing, leaving four of the original six straps present. The surviving straps are fragile and should not be stretched or placed under tension.

The helmet and goggles display very well together and create the appearance of an early German military aviator’s flying equipment. The helmet’s complete fittings, functional chinstrap, PRYM-marked snaps, and attractive condition make it particularly appealing, while the unusual goggles add considerable visual interest despite their missing and detached straps.

This is a very attractive early aviation display set with excellent character and strong potential for further research into its precise manufacturer, date, and original use.
