Item Description
Original Items: Only One Set Available. Here we have a very interesting set of USGI bring-back items, which has some wonderful research potential. These are all WWI items, but it is very possible that they were brought home during the interwar or even post WWII period, as the long term occupation gave USGI's plenty of time to go souvenir hunting.
This lovely set includes:
- One Custom Made Letter Opener made from Shrapnel. Measuring 7 5/8 inches long, this is really an impressive conversation piece, and is truly one of a kind.
- One Imperial German WWI Wound Badge 3rd Class in Black. Of stamped steel construction, these were given for 1-2 wounds sustained in battle. This example retains about 50% of the black paint, with the rest oxidized, giving it a fantastic patina. It still has the pinback but the retaining clip is missing.
- One Imperial German WWI Prussian Brass Iron Cross 1914 2nd Class Medal with Ribbon. We are not sure why this example is made from brass, but it definitely is original and very interesting, with a lovely patina.
- One Imperial German WWI Foot Artillery Erkennungsmarke Identity Dog Tag. German WWI dog tags are something we rarely get, and this one definitely has some great research potential. It has the following information stamped onto it:
LEOPOLD ROTHSCHILD
SCHAAFHEIM i.H.b. Darmstad
7. 7. 87.
Ers. Batl. Fuss. Artl. R. 8.
Ldw. Fuss. Artl. Batl. 8.
1. Battr. Nr 122.
Born in 1887 in Schaafheim outside of Darmstadt, Rothschild looks to have been in the Landwehr reserve service before being called up to be part of an "Ersatz" replacement Foot Artillery (Fuss Artillerie) regiment. The last part indicates the battery he was assigned to.
Some great unique WWI German items, ripe for further research and display!
