Original item: Only One Available. This is a gorgeous Kingdom of Saxony Lionhead Officer’s sword with an original yellow sword knot. The all brass alloy hilt consists of a finely detailed lion’s head with ruby eyes, floral backstrap and "P" guard. Nicely detailed throughout his whiskers, chin, muzzle, and especially the Lion's Mane. The handwork is beautifully rendered throughout this brass. The blade has a gorgeous gold inlay which is in great shape.
This example is in beautiful condition with the gold inlay on the blade almost entirely retained, with only a few areas of light oxidation. The blade has not been sharpened, and there are a few small nicks, but it is still quite nice. The maker of the sword is etched into the spine of the blade, still under the gold inlay, reading
HAST & UHTHOFF, DRESDEN
This maker’s mark indicates production by Hast & Uhthoff, Königlich Hoflieferant (Royal Purveyor to the Court), located in Dresden, then capital of the Kingdom of Saxony. Founded in 1815, this manufacturer of gold and silverware was a purveyor to the Royal Court of Saxony.
They supplied swords and other weapons to the officers of the Royal Army, however these were almost always acquired in Solingen and remarked. The company was one of the few royal purveyors to survive in the Weimar period, and finally closed its doors in 1945. For more information please see J. Anthony Carter's book GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS. The bottom of the gold inlay is etched EISENHAUER (Iron work).
The grip of this example is a black celluloid over a carved wood base. The celluloid is still in good condition. The grip is wrapped with three pairs of twisted wire, with the center pair being larger, and the wrapping is fully intact. There is some dirt and oxidation around the wires, and they show a bit of oxidation. There is some play in the hilt, particularly with the back strap. The design of the hilt is very ornate and complements the beautiful gold inlay of the blade.
The scabbard is in good shape with light oxidation across the finish. It still retains its carrying ring. The yellow word knot is in phenomenal condition and complements the gold of the sword very well. This is a phenomenal officer’s sword for the Kingdom of Saxony, perfect for any German display. This example has very much going for it, so don’t miss out.
