  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original Imperial German WWI Kaiserliche Marine Reichskriegsflagge, or Naval War Ensign, constructed in wool and retaining its original canvas header, rope halyard, and metal attachment hooks.

The flag features the large black and white cross dominating the field, with the Imperial eagle displayed within a circular medallion at the center. The upper canton incorporates the Imperial German black, white, and red colors together with the Prussian Eisernes Kreuz, or Iron Cross.

The flag measures approximately 37 inches tall by 59 inches across, making it a substantial original naval ensign while still being a very manageable size for display.

The body is constructed from wool, the standard material commonly encountered on German naval flags of the period. The hoist edge has a heavy canvas header, which is unmarked, and retains a rope halyard extending from both ends. Oxidized metal attachment hooks remain present at the top and bottom.

Based on its dimensions, this would have been suitable for use aboard a naval vessel, although the exact class or size of ship cannot be determined from dimensions alone.

Condition is good overall. The wool shows expected age staining and a large number of small holes scattered throughout the material. The canvas header remains intact, while the metal fittings show oxidation. Despite the wear, the design remains extremely bold and visually impressive.

The Imperial German naval war ensign developed from the flags adopted by the North German Confederation following Prussia’s victory over Austria in 1866. With Prussia now dominant among the northern German states, the new naval flag incorporated Prussian black and white together with the emerging black, white, and red national colors.

Prince Adalbert of Prussia, an important figure in the development of Prussian and later German naval power, played a major role in the creation of the North German naval ensign. Elements including the Prussian eagle and Iron Cross firmly connected the design with Prussian military tradition.

Following the establishment of the German Empire in 1871, the basic design continued as the war ensign of the Imperial German Navy. It underwent several detail changes during the Imperial period, but retained its characteristic cross, central eagle, Imperial tricolor canton, and Iron Cross.

During WWI, the Reichskriegsflagge became one of the most recognizable symbols of the Kaiserliche Marine and was flown aboard German warships, naval installations, and other authorized military maritime facilities.

Following Germany’s defeat in 1918 and the establishment of the Weimar Republic, the Imperial naval flags were replaced by new national designs. The old Imperial colors and symbols nevertheless continued to appear among nationalist and veterans’ organizations during the postwar period.

This is a very attractive original WWI Imperial German naval ensign with strong color, substantial size, and surviving halyard hardware. Its honest age, scattered holes, oxidized hooks, and original wool construction give it exactly the kind of service worn character collectors look for in an authentic Kaiserliche Marine flag.
