Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good original Imperial German WWI Model 1917 Stielhandgranate, or stick hand grenade, which has been rendered completely inert and retains several particularly desirable original components. The grenade stands approximately 13 ¾ inches tall with a cylindrical steel head approximately 4 inches long, and retains its original belt hook, wooden handle, star-shaped base cap, pull cord, and porcelain pull bead. The handle is marked 7.5.17, apparently indicating a date of May 7, 1917, and is also deeply stamped 5 ½ Sek. N.F.B.

Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. The German WWI M17 Stick Grenade was officially known as the Model 1917 Stielhandgranate (Stick Hand Grenade). It stands 13 3/4 inches tall with a 4 inch long inert explosive head. These are exceptionally rare and far more difficult to find than the WWII M24 version. It is totally inert, and cannot be converted to an explosive device.

The head and of the grenade, which still retains the original belt hanger clip, screws into the original handle collar nicely. There is heavy wear, and the original instructions on the side are almost entirely worn away save for a few letters. For reference, it would have originally said:

This translates to "Before use insert detonator". The warhead is still able to be removed and you can inspect the interior if you would wish to do so. The head has some heavy paint loss showing the bare steel underneath.

The handle is still quite firmly attached to the threaded top fitting with the correct flathead screws. The threaded end fitting is still attached as well, as well as the star-shaped screw cap. The pull string and bead are still retained, still attached to the end piece.

One side of the stick is marked with what appears to be 7.5.17 for a date of May 7th, 1917. The opposite side is deeply stamped with 5 ½ Sek. N.F.B., indicating the fuze delay, as well as the maker of the handle.

This example is particularly noteworthy for the combination of its May 1917-dated handle, 5 ½ Sek. fuze-delay marking, surviving N.F.B. contractor initials, original belt hook, removable inert head, star-shaped base cap, and especially the original pull cord and porcelain bead. These surviving components make it a strong and unusually complete representative example of the German M1917 Stielhandgranate used during the latter half of WWI.
