Original Imperial German WWI Etched Artillery Officer's Sword with Scabbard by Mohr & Speyer, Berlin

Item Description

Original item: Only One Available. Just received out of long long storage! Despite the machine guns and artillery, swords were still issued to officers in WWI. This is a fine example of the German Artillery Officer's Sword, commonly referred to as the "Blücher Sabel," named for the Prussian Commander Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, who was ally to the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

This example looks to have been "dressed up", most likely purpose made as a presentation sword, as the blade is fully blunt. It was originally fully nickel plated, and has a lovely triple etched blade. It has a sharkskin grip without wire wrapping in the grooves.

One side of the blade is etched the usual stands of arms, as well as the Prussian Imperial Eagle, and of course the "crossed cannon" for an artillery officer. The sword also has the characteristic single knuckle bow "P-Shaped" hand guard of the standard artillery saber. The crossguard does have rainguard “chappes”, and there are the usual back strap side tabs.

The included scabbard looks to be original to the sword and retains both suspension rings. Overall condition is very good, with wear and oxidation commensurate with age and service.

A most desirable German WWI Artillery Officer's Dress "Blücher Sabel" with an unmatched steel scabbard. Regimentally marked and ready to display!
