Original Item. Only One Available. "Ersatz" bayonets and scabbards are emergency war-time issue bayonets made for reserve and rear-line troops. Ersatz translates to "replacement", and they were constructed of whatever happened to be on hand, resulting in some very interesting examples. This is one such example, with what appears to be a French or British socket bayonet blade mounted onto a known Ersatz pattern handle. It comes in a custom-made cylindrical scabbard which appears similar to other German Ersatz examples we have seen.
Constructed by Germany during WWI using an Ersatz all steel hilt and a British P-1853 socket bayonet blade with some scattered acceptance stamps. The triangular blade is 16 5/8" long, with an overall length of 21 1/4". The bayonet has a heavy stamped steel two-piece ribbed hilt with split muzzle ring and a functional catch.
The bayonet comes complete with its all steel tubular ersatz scabbard with frog stud. The end of the scabbard is open with a hole, but refuse has been stuffed inside it seems. There is some cracking along the edge as well.
This is a very interesting example, very similar to the Carter Type 69 seen in GERMAN BAYONETS VOLUME III pages 155 -157 by J.A.CARTER, published by the Tharston Press 1992.
