Original Item. Only One Available. Otto Schmidt-Hofer, born in Berlin in 1873, was a German sculptor who worked during the late 19th century and early 20th century. His work was primarily Neoclassical and Art Nouveau between 1893-1914 and Art Deco from 1915 until his death in 1925 Berlin, Germany.
This is an outstanding bronze statue of an Imperial German soldier advancing into battle with his rifle. It measures 7 ⅞” tall and stands on a 2 ½ x 2 ½ x 2 ¾” marble base. The bronze base is signed Schmidt Hofer. The statue is in great condition but does appear to be missing the bayonet on the front of the rifle. The fluted wooden grip of the bayonet can be seen at the rifle’s end, but the blade broke away long ago. The statue weighs 2.75lb.
The soldier carries what is likely a Gewehr 98, and wears a Pickelhaube spike helmet with a cloth cover. He wears what is likely an M1910 Summerweight uniform with ammunition pouches and a bayonet scabbard with attached troddel knot. He has the correct Tornister to his back with an attached blanket, mess kit, with his canteen and bread bag attached at the back of his belt. Even the bottom of his shoe shows bumping from the hobnails. Aside from the missing bayonet, this bronze is near perfect and will make an outstanding addition to any Imperial German collection.
