Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice Imperial German reserve forces pickelhaube helmet, most likely issued in the Kingdom of Bavaria. The construction is similar to the Bavarian models, though it is a bit simplified. It has a cross shaped top fitting with a top vent, typical of Bavarian pickelhaube, however it is not designed to take any type of spike or other device. The rest of the fittings are brass, however it does not have any trim around the front visor.
The helmet did at one point have a Wappen (front plate), however it unfortunately came unsoldered from the mounting bracket, which is all that remains. The chin strap on this helmet looks to have been sewn directly into the sides, and is completely missing.
The helmet still has an original liner, which is the standard type, and has 9 fingers. It does have perforations around the forehead area, so it may possibly be a later replacement from the Weimar period, but we do not see any signs of alteration. It is missing the top securing strap unfortunately.
There is an ink stamp on one of the liner fingers that gives the maker name and location:
August Monell
BAD TÖLZ
Bad Tölz is a city in the very south of Bavaria, so this is almost certainly a Bavarian helmet. The Kingdom was the largest and most powerful in the German Empire besides Prussia, and did maintain a higher level of autonomy than other states. This included their own particular designs of helmets, and their own suppliers. One of the fingers is also named to M. Greil, and Greil is written on the top support strap as well.
Overall a very nice condition Bavarian Reserve pickelhaube, perfect for any WWI Era or German Helmet collection!
