Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very good original Imperial German WWI-era Artillery Officer’s lion head dress sword manufactured by the renowned Solingen firm Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie. The sword features a finely detailed gilt brass lion-head hilt with red glass “ruby” eyes, wire-wrapped sharkskin grip, crossed-cannon artillery insignia on the front langet, a nickel-plated blade, and its original black-finished steel scabbard.
The grip is wire-wrapped sharkskin with three twisted strands of wire in each groove, which is in good order. The sharkskin is well-retained and the hilt still has some gilding.
The 31 7/8 inch blade of this sword is in good condition with sharpening, and only shows light any signs of use or abuse, mostly along the edge. The plating is very well-retained and the etching is lovely. These were originally intended ceremonial swords, and not really intended for cutting, though this one was sharpened heavily. The blade has a great nickel plated finish, with no etching. There is a heavy amount of runner wear and sharpening wear to the finish.
The ricasso is stamped with the “King’s Head” and “King’s Helmet” over W.K.&C. trademarks of WEYERSBERG KIRSCHBAUM & CO SOLINGEN. WKC is one of the more famous makers in the legendary "City of Blades", Solingen. They were chosen for their pre-eminence even within the center of German edged weapon manufacture to make the swords celebrating the Kaiser's day that Celebrated the city.
The scabbard is standard with a single hanging ring, and retains most of the black enamel finish. There is minor denting, which does not interfere with sheathing the blade.
The combination of its crossed-cannon artillery langet, red glass lion eyes, sharkskin and wire grip, surviving gilding, W.K.&C. King’s Head and Knight’s Helmet trademark, nickel-plated blade, and black single-ring scabbard makes this a strong representative example of a privately purchased Imperial German artillery officer’s dress sword from the WWI period.
