  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is a beautiful classic Nickel-Plated Imperial German WWI Presentation sword, used by a member of the 9th (2nd Rhenish) Hussars. It conforms to the Model 1889 standard quite well, with a straight thrusting blade, and a basket hilt guard. The presentation version is of course quite less robust than the cavalry issue, and these were privately purchased, so there is no acceptance marking on the spine. This example has a lovely fireblued blade.

The guard is partly "fold-away", and that portion also bears the Prussian Eagle on it, with the shield of the House of Hohenzollern on the chest. The guard shows some oxidation. The grip is molded bakelite or gutta percha, and is missing some material under the fold-away guard. The leather blade buffer is still present, and in good shape.

The 30¾” blade of this example is in excellent condition, with just a few scratches and areas of oxidation where the plating has flaked. It has an incredible triple-etched design, meaning it is on both sides as well as the spine of the blade. The designs have the typical borders and floral designs.

The main panel on the right side also has a unit designation, written in German Black-Letter "Textura" type face:

    2. Rhein. Husaren Reg. No 9.

This would indicate the soldier was a member of the 2. Rheinische Husaren-Regiment Nr. 9 or 9th (2nd Rhenish) Hussars. They fought during WWI as part of the Imperial German 7th Cavalry Division. There is no maker marking on the blade we could see.

The steel scabbard has a single hanging ring, as the second fitting was for a hook on the hanger. It has the standard black enamel finish, which has worn off heavily in some areas, and the underlying steel has oxidized. The scabbard is mostly straight without any heavy denting.

Overall condition is very good. Ready to display!
