Original Item: Only one available. This is a very nice Great War Imperial German Field Cap (Feldmütze or Krätzche) for a Train Guard Battalion. It is constructed of grey/green "Felgrau" wool with dark blue cap band and dark blue piping along with an interior linen lining. The front of the cap bears two Black, White and Red Reichskokarde (Imperial Cockade) on the front of the crown, the top of which was recently sewn back on. We are unsure of why this example has two national cockades.
The cap is in fantastic condition for its age with only a few scattered moth nips across the wool exterior. The interior shows a heavy patina which is completely correct for these. There are two markings on the interior, the first reading
B A XVIII
1917
This is a Depot Stamp, B A meaning Bekleidungsamt or Clothing Depot. XVIII is for the XVIII (18th) Armee-Korps (Darmstadt), a mixed corps of Grossherzogl, Hessisches and Provinz Hessen, the latter of which was under Prussian rule. This stamp indicates where and when the cap was issued.
The second marking reads
Stellrecht & Berg
MAINZ
This is likely the original maker of the cap, but we are unable to find any reference to the maker. Mainz is a major German city in the Rhineland, so it is certainly a period stamp.
This is a fantastic example of a scarce model of Feldmütze for a Train Guard battalion, ready for further research and display.
