  • Original Item: Only One Available. This German Military bugle in the key of C is of mostly yellow brass construction with "German Silver" fittings, typical of German brass instruments. The bugle was fully restored sometime in the past few decades, buffed and given a lacquer finish, so it still looks fantastic! We can see evidence of past dent work, but overall it is a prime specimen and is absolutely authentic. It comes complete with its original mouthpiece (removable) attached by a chain to the rear suspension ring, and it still retains the suspension ring on the bell as well.

The bell kranz is in good condition, showing just a bit of deformation, and the seamed brass bell is in great shape. The Prussian Arms in an Oval shield displays a Spread Eagle wearing a Crown with F.R. to center, with the eagle carrying a Sword and a Scepter in either claw. This is soldered onto the bell as standard, and under this it bears a stamped date and makers mark:

    1913
    A. WENDLER SCHWERIN i.M.

Herman August Wendler (1851-1926) was born and trained in Markneukirchen, a city with a long history of Brass Instrument making, just like the nearby Kraslice in the Czech Republic. His father was the brass instrument maker Johann Friedrich August Wendler. A. Wendler established a workshop in Schwerin in what was then the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin during 1876. He later received the title of Hofinstrumentenmacher (Court Instrument Maker) in 1898.

This bugle is definitely one of the best condition examples we have seen, though some might prefer that it had not been lacquered after the restoration. However it still rings clear if one knows how to use it. It looks to be made entirely of seamed brass tubing, with the brazing lines still visible in the light.

A romantic item from the terrible First World War, ready to display or even use!
