Original Item: Only One Available. This is a handsome Imperial German M1889-style private purchase cavalry presentation sword associated directly with the Magdeburgisches Husaren-Regiment Nr. 10, or 10th (Magdeburg) Hussars, by its etched regimental inscription. The sword follows the familiar Model 1889 cavalry form with a straight thrusting blade, basket hilt, folding inner guard section, molded black grip, and steel scabbard. Unlike a government-issued service weapon, however, this is a lighter privately purchased presentation or commemorative example with an extensively decorated triple-etched blade and no visible military acceptance marking.
The guard is partly "fold-away", and that portion also bears the Prussian Eagle on it, with the shield of the House of Hohenzollern on the chest. The guard shows some heavy denting and oxidation, and the fold-away guard takes some force to fold now. The grip is molded bakelite or gutta percha, and has some material loss at the top, bottom, and middle, with cracking under the fold-away guard. The felt blade buffer is still present, and in good shape.
The 31 ⅞” blade of this example is in good condition with heavy wear to the nickel plating as shown. It has an incredible triple-etched design, meaning it is on both sides as well as the spine of the blade. The designs have the typical borders and floral designs.
The main panel on the right side also has a unit designation, written in German Black-Letter "Textura" type face:

STENDAL
This would indicate the soldier was a member of the Magdeburgisches Husaren-Regiment Nr. 10 or 10th (Magdeburg) Hussars. The 10th Hussars were stationed from 1814 to 1884 in Aschersleben and after 1884 in Stendal. They fought in 1866 at the Battle of Königgrätz and later in World War I. There is no maker mark on the blade.
The steel scabbard has a single hanging ring, as the second fitting was for a hook on the hanger. It has the standard black enamel finish, which has worn off heavily in some areas, and the underlying steel has oxidized. The scabbard is mostly straight but there is some denting in places. The throat is stamped with unit marking 10.J.P.2.7., which would denote issue to the Jäger-Regiment zu Pferde Nr. 10.
Condition overall is very good for a heavily aged private-purchase cavalry sword, with the strongest features being the extensive triple etching and clearly legible regimental inscription. The principal condition issues are the extensive plating loss, oxidation, dented and stiff folding guard, cracking and loss to the grip, and scabbard finish wear and denting.
With its Magdeb. Hus. Regt. No 10 / STENDAL inscription, elaborate triple-etched blade, Prussian eagle basket guard, surviving felt washer, and single-ring black steel scabbard, this is a particularly attractive Imperial German cavalry presentation sword. Its etched unit designation gives it a direct institutional connection to one of Prussia’s historic hussar regiments and makes it especially suitable for a collection focused on Imperial German cavalry, regimental presentation swords, the 10th Hussars, or WWI-era edged weapons.
