Item Description
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a nice example of an M1895 Pickelhaube with an extremely scarce Prussian Wappen (front plate) with the “Waterloo” banner, denoting issue to the Prussian / Hannoverian 165th Infantry Regiment, for their service in that great battle. This example is stamped under the rear visor with a scrubbed date and unit marking. We can make out the year, 1899, but the unit marking is too worn to discern.
The front wappen features a crowned Prussian state eagle clutching a scepter and orb in its claws over the King's motto, MIT GOTT FÜR KOENIG UND VATERLAND (With God for King and Country, i.e. Prussia) with a scroll between the wings reading WATERLOO. The wappen is held in place by the leather wedges, which appear newer than the rest of the helmet. The helmet is overall in great condition with little crazing to the exterior leather but nothing serious. The liner is present, however it has heavy leather crazing and cracking, but the original tie string is intact and still connected to all of the tongues.
It is complete with original Prussian (black and white) and German National Colors (red white and black) Kokarden (cockades) around the chin strap lugs. In 1897 the new Reichs-Kokarde in Red-White-Black was introduced for all ranks to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the birth of Kaiser Wilhelm 1st. The chinstrap holding the cockades in place is a reproduction.
The exterior of the helmet shell is in good shape, with very little change to the shape, and the black finish still exhibits a nice sheen. There are areas of cracking and checking, especially on the front and rear visors, but they just serve to add to the lovely patina of age.
This is a tremendous Imperial Prussian pickelhaube with a very scarce “Waterloo” plate, perfect for any WWI collection!
