  • Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very worm but lovely condition Imperial German Model 1889 Infantry Officer sword and scabbard with a tremendous damascus steel blade, presented by a member of the von Oertzen family to a member of the von Harbou family, almost certainly by an officer to an officer. The hilt is a gilded brass D shape fold away guard with the Imperial German eagle of Kaiser Wilhelm II. The grip is brass wire bound over horn/ebony with a brass cypher of the Kaiser in the center on one side, and on the other is a gothic P under a crown, which we could not identify. The wire has come a bit loose however. This model of sword would often have a leather fore finger loop on the inside of the guard, but this one is gone.

The 28 ¾” damascus steel blade is embossed in gothic text:

    O.H. von Oertzen s./l. B. von Harbou
O.H. von Oertzen to his dear B. von Harbou

This denotes the presentation of the sword from O.H. von Oertzen to his dear friend, B. von Harbou. This requires a lot more research. Interestingly, the pommel of the sword is engraved with the heraldry of the von Oertzen family, and this same symbol is engraved on the crossguard opposite the folding guard.

The spine of the blade is etched:

    M. NEUMANN HOFLIEFERANT BERLIN

"M. Neumann Hoflieferant Berlin." "Hoflieferant" means that this supplier was a provider to the Royal Prussian Palace and was granted the honor of using this title on his grand offerings.

The blade has very heavy wear and oxidation pitting coming through the damascus patterning. The blade buffer is gone, and the folding guard is now loose. The overall length is 34 ½”.

The 29 ½” steel scabbard shows very heavy pitting and oxidation across, with a small slit hole sawed into the scabbard under the second suspension ring mount, for an unknown reason.

An interesting M1889 sword that requires some deeper research. Ready for display!

    Approximate Specifications:
    Blade Length: 28 3/4”
    Total Length: 34 1/2”
    Scabbard Length” 29 ½”
