Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. By the mid 19th Century the Prussian Cavalry was still equipped with the "Blucher-saber". It had a simple stirrup hilt which offered little protection for the hand when used in combat. Some attempts were made to improve it by adding on additional bars, but it did not work. After a battle in July 1848 with Danish Dragoons, a Prussian trooper had written in a letter about his saber. Three of his comrades had had their fingers cut and knuckles wounded in the battle due to lack of proper hand protection. Much to the envy of their opponents, Danish troopers carried a basket hiked saber, which proved very successful.
This is a lovely Pre-WWI era Imperial German officer’s dragoon saber, which is engraved on the top of the guard:
H. Peineman
1. Esk. 16 Drg. Rgt.
This names the saber to an H. Peineman of the 1st Eskadron, 16th Dragoon Regiment, or the 1st Squadron, Hannoversches Dragoner-Regiment Nr. 16. The scabbard under the throat is also engraved H.P., for the officer’s initials, which matches the scabbard to the saber.
The 33” blade shows heavy wear with remnants of the original etching to both sides, with floral and patriotic motifs. The spine of the blade has the etched marking:
M. NEUMANN BERLIN
This denotes manufacture in Berlin by Max Neumann, who held a royal warrant from the German Emperor for the production of swords. Neumann was active from 1890 to 1911.
The hilt shows heavy wear to the plating, with oxidation bubbling in spots across. The grip is wire-wrapped sharkskin, which is still well-retained with some looseness to the wire. The leather finger loop is still retained although it is heavily cracked and torn. The overall length of the sword is 38 ⅜”.
The 33 ⅞” scabbard shows similar wear to the plating, with both scabbard rings retained. There is minor denting but nothing serious.
A lovely Pre-WWI named Dragoon saber, ready for display!
