Item Description
Original item. One Only Available. This design was based on the BRITISH LIGHT CAVALRY SWORD of 1796. It was this sword that Napoleon himself complained about, stating that the shape of the blade made the tip especially vicious and therefore was an affront to humanity. The Prussians, Britain's allies in the Napoleonic wars, immediately adopted this pattern, which ever since is commonly referred to as the "Blücher Sabel" named for the Prussian Commander Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, who was ally to the Duke of Wellington at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. The sword continued with this form up until the Artillery Saber of WWI.
This example retains its original thick metal scabbard with both hanging rings retained. The sword and scabbard are both marked with 8.T.E. 226, an Imperial German unit marking, which matches the sword with the scabbard. The sword also has a beautiful Prussian sword knot, with the black and white colors of the Prussian cockade.
The hilt is in great shape, retaining much of the leather wrapped around the grip. The spine of the sword is marked 1811 B.M. which we can only assume refers to the model of sword, M1811, Blücher Model. The ricasso is marked SOLINGEN on one side, and P. KNECHT on the other side for Peter Knecht of Solingen. These markings are under the rain guard (chappe), which makes it quite hard to see, and even harder to photograph.
This is an extremely scarce model of sword with tons of character, ready for further research and display!
