Original Item. Only One Available. Otto Eduard Leopold, Prince of Bismarck, Count of Bismarck-Schönhausen, Duke of Lauenburg was a German statesman and diplomat who oversaw the unification of Germany and served as its first chancellor from 1871 to 1890. Bismarck's Realpolitik and firm governance resulted in his being popularly known as the Iron Chancellor (Eiserner Kanzler).
This is a really beautiful ceramic plate manufactured by Mettlach in 1896 as indicated by the 96 stamped on the back. The plate measures 15¼” in diameter and is 1⅛” deep. It depicts Otto von Bismarck on horseback wearing his Kuirassier Helmet.
The color is retained really well and the gilting on his helmet fittings and the horse’s brass fittings is retained with some loss. The back of the plate retains the wire for hanging, and is marked in the center with the logo for Mettlach over maker information over 2142, likely the plate model number, and 96, for the year of manufacture, 1896.
A tremendous plate, the first of its kind we have offered. Ready for further research and display.
