Original Item. Only One Available. This is an outstanding German Pre-WWI era Grosser Ordnanz Pattern Artillery Officer’s saber with a lovely lion’s head pommel in its original scabbard. The sword bears military acceptance stamps dated 1904, and the blade has been sharpened to have a pronounced clip point.
The hilt is lovely with foliate designs and crossed cannons on one of the rain chapes. The grip is wire-wrapped sharkskin though the wire is a bit loose now. The ricasso is stamped behind the large rain chape:

This denotes manufacture by Alexander Coppel & Co. located in the legendary "City of Blades", Solingen. This company manufactured bayonets for many years and up through WWII under the name Alcoso. The spine of the blade is stamped 04 under a proof mark of a Crown over W., for Kaiser Wilhelm II, and the year the bayonet was accepted, 1904.
The 33 ¼” blade is still in great condition and the sharpening appears of the period and rather excellent. The leather blade buffer is retained. The overall length is 38 ½”, and there are additional acceptance stamps on the crossguard and backstrap of the hilt.
The chemically-blackened steel scabbard shows heavy denting and wear, but retains the suspension ring. The denting is mostly toward the drag. These were typically chemically blackened by being black manganese parkerized, a method developed in 1869, which involves an immersion process. The drag retains a faint acceptance stamp on one side.
