Original Item. Only One Available. This is an outstanding helmet that never had an example of before. This is a Saxon Uhlan Tschapka in the Model of 1889, with the body and mortarboard being a single piece. This example appears to have been fitted with a later style Wappen and a reproduction cockade, but retains original chinscales and a great retained liner.
In 1889 a new model of Tschapka was introduced. The flat top was reduced in size substantially from the M1867 and now measured on average 20 cm diagonally. An additional modification was the addition of two holes in the neck to aid in ventilation. As with all helmets in service at the time, this Model 1889 Preußen Mannschaften (Other Ranks) Garde - Ulanen - Regt. Tschapka was updated with the new Reich's Kokarde in 1897 to be worn on the right side of the Tschapka. This example has no cockades on the helmet itself, with a reproduction Saxon cockade on the mortarboard.
The mortarboard of this example measures 20cm diagonally, which confirms it as an M1889, as the M1867 was 26cm diagonally.
This helmet features a wappen (front plate) with a gilt brass star, on top of which is a "German Silver" coat of arms of the Kingdom of Sachsen (Saxony), which is surrounded by leaves and topped by a King's Crown. This is likely the incorrect style for an M1889 as it has loops for leather wedges instead of posts for small screws. It still displays very well on this helmet.
The chinscales are in good order and still connect in the middle, but the leather strap on one side is broken and missing some material, so the strap cannot be buckled.
The interior of the helmet shows a great retained 11-tongue early style liner, entirely correct and original to this M1889. Under the liner are some very interesting stamped markings that could warrant further research:
