Original Item: Only One Available. This is an impressive German commemorative beer stein celebrating the victory over France in the Franco-Prussian War and the unification of Germany under Prussian leadership in 1871. Decorated with the flags of Prussia and the newly established German Empire, a central cross bearing the date 1871, and the patriotic motto “Einigkeit Macht Stark,” this is a visually striking reminder of the military victories and political transformation that created Imperial Germany. The stein is one of the earliest commemorative examples we have handled and retains its original hinged lid, although the upper portion of the lid has broken away.
The principal decoration features the flags of Imperial Germany and Prussia arranged around a central cross marked: 1871
The date commemorates the conclusion of the Franco-Prussian War and the proclamation of the German Empire. On January 18, 1871, King Wilhelm I of Prussia was proclaimed German Emperor in the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles, formally uniting the German states under Prussian leadership while the war with France was still underway.
Above the central design is the phrase:
Einigkeit Macht Stark
This translates as:
Unity Is Strength
The motto was particularly appropriate to the events of 1870 and 1871. The military cooperation of the North German Confederation and the southern German states against France helped accelerate the political unification that German nationalists had sought for decades. Variations of this motto appeared on medals, prints, steins, and other patriotic objects commemorating both victory in the war and the creation of the German Empire.
The Franco-Prussian War began in July 1870 and quickly resulted in a series of major German victories. French Emperor Napoleon III was captured following the Battle of Sedan, Paris was placed under siege, and France ultimately accepted an armistice in early 1871. The conflict reshaped the balance of power in Europe, ended the Second French Empire, and established the newly unified Germany as a leading continental power.
The stein retains its original hinged metal lid, which is intricately decorated. Unfortunately, the upper layer or decorative portion of the lid has broken away and is now loose within the upper section, where it can be heard rattling. We are unable to determine exactly how the damage occurred. The surviving lid assembly should be handled carefully to prevent additional loss or deterioration.
The side of the stein is marked:
½L
This indicates a capacity of one half liter.
The underside bears an old manufacturer’s mark, although the maker has not been identified from the supplied information.
The stein measures approximately 7 inches tall and has a base diameter of approximately 3 ¾ inches.
German military and patriotic steins were produced to commemorate campaigns, victories, units, periods of service, and major national events. While the elaborate named regimental steins most familiar to collectors became especially popular between approximately 1890 and 1914, earlier commemorative pieces celebrated the Franco-Prussian War, the proclamation of the German Empire, and the veterans who had participated in the conflict.
The flags, 1871 cross, and unity motto make the subject of this example immediately recognizable. These symbols reflect both Prussian military leadership and the broader German national identity that emerged from the war. Such objects would have appealed to veterans, patriotic organizations, and households wishing to commemorate the creation of the Empire.
This is a particularly appealing Franco-Prussian War and German unification commemorative stein with bold patriotic decoration, a clearly visible 1871 date, the evocative “Einigkeit Macht Stark” motto, its original hinged lid, half liter capacity mark, and an early manufacturer’s mark beneath the base. The broken and loose upper lid component is fully disclosed, but the stein remains a substantial and highly displayable artifact for a Franco-Prussian War, German unification, Prussian, Imperial German, patriotic ceramics, or military stein collection.
