Original Item. Only One Available. This is an excellent example of a German WWII wood-handled Nahkampfmesser, or close combat knife, complete with its original steel boot scabbard. The knife follows a practical pattern derived from German fighting knives used during WWI and subsequently manufactured, carried, and reissued during the WWII period.
In excellent overall condition, this knife has a smooth wooden grip secured by three steel rivets. Grip scales are in very good condition, with no major cracks or chips, and just a few scuffs. There is a knot in the wood on one side. The blade is full length on the bottom of the blade, while the top has a false edge, which has been sharpened. It looks to have been polished heavily with some runner wear. Overall length is now 10 1/2 inches with a 5 7/8 inch blade, and we were not able to find any maker marking on the knife, which is not uncommon, and the marking may have worn away from the polishing.
The original WWII scabbard is in excellent condition, with the original finish nearly entirely intact. The scabbard body is still straight and dent free, and the spring steel belt clip is in very good shape.
Compact knives of this general form were carried by German military personnel as private-purchase, commercial, and occasionally issued fighting and utility knives. Collector terminology commonly identifies them as Nahkampfmesser, boot knives, or trench fighting knives.
The wood grip, three-rivet construction, unsharpened false edge, full-length blade, and well-preserved steel clip scabbard make this a particularly strong example of the type. The extensive blade polishing and resulting loss of any possible maker’s mark are the principal condition considerations, while the grip and scabbard remain notably well preserved.
