Item Description
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a nice condition model M38 G-Maske or Gasschutzmaske (Gas protection mask), complete with an Original Filter and an incredibly scarce period original painted Desert Camouflaged M38 Gas Mask canister, as used by German troops during the various desert campaigns of WWII. The tan paint is retained very well with just the right amount of wear present on the ribbed body. This is by far one of the best DAK M38 camouflaged canisters we have come across. This example comes with all straps. The set features all WWII Dates and markings from the ones we could see.
The Model M38 was first issued to troops in 1938, replacing the earlier M30, made of rubberized canvas and rubber. The M-38 body is made completely of rubber, ensuring a great seal, and less issues with degradation in service. The spring-loaded straps fit over the head and were tightened by means of sliding the web straps through metal buckles until the mask was as tight as the user could stand it - ensuring a good air tight seal. Another strap would be placed around the user's neck and if the mask was not in use it would rest on the chest should they need it in a hurry.
Markings on these masks were put into the mold for the rubber body though due to the heavy paint these makings cannot be found on the nose piece.
The metal alloy eye socket frames on this early issue M38 are painted green, and are the early non-magnetic type. In 1943, due to material shortages, gas masks were made with steel fittings, and had blue painted fittings to indicate that they were "magnetical".
The condition of the mask is very good without any clear markings. The FE41 filter is Waffenamt marked (partially) and dated 1942.
The carry case is a Long Model 1938 Wehrmacht type, which was introduced to house the stiffer M38 gas masks. It has the original metal inner sleeve, but not the Reinigungslappen (Cleaning Rag) , only the Lappenhalter (Rag Holder) spring is still present. The can is in very good original condition, and does appear to have had at least 1 field repaint done which is obvious as it’s now tan. The spare lens insert compartment still has the original retaining spring but does not have any lenses. The straps are still present and in a worn condition but still solid. The can still retains its original canvas straps, correct for Afrikacorps issue. The spring-loaded retention strap is partially marked with a maker’s code and a 1943 date.
Overall, a really nice desert field-painted German WWII Gas mask. Ready to add to your collection and display!
