The central device “S” stands for Schirrmeister. In German military usage, Schirrmeister originally referred to an individual responsible for harness, saddlery, leather equipment, and related stores. The duties expanded considerably with the increasing use of motor transport, and the position came to encompass responsibility for transport equipment, vehicles, maintenance, and associated unit stores.
