Original Item: Only One Available. This is a German WWII Waffen-S.S. collar tab intended for personnel of the 11th S.S. Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division “Nordland.” It is constructed from black wool with a machine-embroidered silver-gray Sonnenrad, or sunwheel, consisting of a rounded mobile swas. enclosed within a circular design.

The Sonnenrad was the distinctive divisional emblem associated with Nordland and was authorized for use in place of the standard S.S. runes on the right collar tab, although period evidence indicates that the conventional runic tab continued to be worn by many division members.

The tab remains in very good condition, with the silver-gray embroidery retaining strong definition and contrasting nicely against the black wool field. The wool exhibits scattered lint, light age and storage wear, and some minor irregularity and fraying along the raw edges. The embroidered Sonnenrad itself remains substantially complete with only normal age toning to the thread. Overall, it presents particularly well, with the important divisional emblem remaining bold and immediately recognizable. The reverse retains its tan coarse-weave textile stiffener, likely a buckram-type backing, surrounded by the folded black wool border and secured with stitching.

The 11th S.S. Volunteer Panzergrenadier Division “Nordland” was organized in 1943 as part of the Waffen-S.S. effort to incorporate foreign volunteers into German formations. Although popularly remembered as a Scandinavian division, its composition was more complicated: the formation included a substantial number of ethnic Germans in addition to Scandinavian volunteers. Its best-known infantry formations were the “Norge” and “Danmark” regiments, associated respectively with Norwegian and Danish volunteers.

After initial service and anti-partisan operations in Croatia, Nordland was transferred to the northern sector of the Eastern Front. It fought during the retreat from the Leningrad area, at Narva and the Tannenberg Line, and later in the Courland battles. In early 1945 the remnants were transferred through Pomerania toward the Oder, and much of the surviving division was eventually drawn into the Battle of Berlin, where it was largely destroyed during the final fighting of the European war.

The distinctive Sonnenrad therefore makes this one of the more immediately recognizable foreign-volunteer Waffen-S.S. collar tabs, representing a formation whose wartime path stretched from the Balkans and Baltic region to the final battle for Berlin.
