Original German WWII USGI Inscribed K98k Bayonet by Alex Coppel with Matching Serial Numbers

Item Description

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. This Karabiner 98 kurz 98k bayonet is in very nice condition throughout. The mortise button and lock works well. The grip plates are of dark bakelite, still in choice condition and retained by screw and spanner hardware. The obverse ricasso of the blade is numbered 6844 which matches the number stamped on the obverse scabbard throat. The reverse of the blade is marked 44fnj, which is also seen on the reverse of the scabbard. 44 fnj is the maker code for Alexander Coppel GmbH a top maker of German wedged weapons during World War Two.

The scabbard is complete with a fine, rough textured leather frog. This frog is the style with four aluminum rivet construction and is equipped with a retainer loop and aluminum boss.

The blade of this bayonet is in very choice condition, with some original blued finish remaining. However, the best parts of this bayonet are the USGI inscriptions on the blade that read as follows:

Side 1:

England 1943-44 - Scotland
London- Bideford - Taunton - Glasgow
Southampton - Winchester

Side 2:

Holland - Belgium - France -
Luxemborg- 1944- Liege - Hasselt - Rennes - Paris - Le Mans

These inscriptions follow a USGI from his straining in the UK in preparation for D-Day and operation overlord on June 6th 1944 all the way through the fall of 1944 with the liberation of Holland and Belgium. A wonderful genuine keepsake of an American soldier’s time in World War Two. You’ll never find another quite like it!
