Original German WWII USGI Berchtesgaden Bring Back AH Herend China Plate Presented to AH by Miklos Horthy, Regent of Hungary with Letter of Provenance - Captured by 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment

Item Description

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. Silver, flatware and serving pieces that were specifically made for the residences of Adolf H were highly sought after by USGIs as bring back trophies. Many items were recovered at The Berghof and the Eagle’s Nest at Obersalzberg near Berchtesgaden. This Herend China plate was part of a set gifted to AH by Miklos Horthy, Regent of Hungary. The plate was taken by Lieutenant Robert Alfred Tanner Jr, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, in the Spring of 1945, when he entered the Eagle’s Nest (Kehlsteinhaus).

From our research, it’s known that Horthy and AH met, and at the 1937 Berlin exhibition he was fascinated by the dinner service painted with the Victoria pattern. The items present both the blue German coat of arms and Horthy’s coat of arms, and of course, the German language Herend mark. This plate meets all of that criteria, and is certainly a plate that was part of the diplomatic gifts from Horthy to the leader of the Third Reich.

The plate is a gorgeous construction, the design of which features flowers, foliage, and three different butterflies. The plate measures roughly 9¾” in diameter. The back features the blue German coat of arms and Horthy’s coat of arms, the German language Herend mark.

The plate comes with a notarized letter of provenance from Lieutenant Robert Alfred Tanner Jr’s daughter-in-law, verifying that Tanner brought this plate back which was removed from the mountain house that was located near the southeast German town of Berchtesgaden at the end of World War II.

The letter reads:

My mother's first husband, Lieutenant, Robert Alfred Tanner Jr., of the 508 Parachute Infantry, was one of the American soldiers to enter the H****r's Eagle Nest (Kehlsteinhaus) in the Spring of 1945. He brought back this plate that he removed from the mountain house located near the southeast German town of Berchtesgaden at the end of World War Two.

This is a stupendous piece of WWII history, a verified piece of china gifted to AH by Miklos Horthy, Regent of Hungary. It is sure to only appreciate in value over the years. This piece comes ready for further research and display!
