Item Description
Original Items. One-of-a-Kind. Radione R3 was a military shortwave receiver in a civil enclosure, developed and manufactured in 1941 by Radio Nikolaus Eltz in Wien (Vienna, Austria). It was used during World War II (WWII) by the German Army (Wehrmacht), Navy (Kriegsmarine) and the Intelligence Service (Abwehr). It was often used in combination with the RS-20M transmitter, but also as a standalone receiver, for example with the Abwehr S-87/20 transmitter.
This is a tremendous German Wehrmacht radio in its original case with several accessories, captured and mailed home by 1st Lieutenant John Dohy of the 1st Signal Battalion. How proper that a signalman would want to send home a radio! The radio retains its data plate:
Hersteller: bo
Type: R3 Fabr. Nr.: 12226
Volt 110-220/6 Per.: ~/=
Vor Feuchtigkeit schützen.
The radio itself measures 14 x 6½ x 9”. The original case comes with several knobs and other accessories, with a sock filled with broken parts. The box also contains a U.S. Army Signal Corps Loudspeaker LS-7, certainly taken home as well by Dohy. The original wire is intact.
The box contains the original capture paper however it is completely eaten up by worms or moths. It denotes that the radio was taken on August 25th, 1945 by John P. Dohy, and signed for approval by another lieutenant in the 1st Signal Battalion. It is heavily worn and should be framed.
The entire box measures 17½ x 16½ x 9½”. One of the hinges is partially broken, and the set in general has some heavy wear. A fantastic set, which could possibly work again with some TLC. Ready for further research and display.
