  • Original Item: Only One Available. This is an original German WWII M24-style training stick grenade, commonly referred to as a Stielhandgranate or “potato masher,” assembled with a 1940-dated wooden shaft bearing markings associated with Richard Rinker GmbH. German practice grenades of this general type were designated Übungshandgranaten, or exercise hand grenades, and were used for repeated training rather than as live explosive ordnance.

Unloaded or dummy grenades, artillery shell casings, and similar devices, which are cut or drilled in an BATF-approved manner so that they cannot be used as ammunition components for destructive devices, are not considered NFA weapons. This example is in total compliance and is NOT AVAILABLE FOR EXPORT.

The practice head is entirely devoid of paint, exposing the bare brass construction beneath. We do not know when or why the original finish was removed, and the surface now shows a deep, even patina from age. Several stress cracks are visible in the brass between some of the perforations, and these should be considered when handling the piece.

The practice head remains attached to the wooden shaft, although two of the four screws/rivets are missing, so the throat fitting wobbles slightly. The head unscrews from the handle for inspection of the interior. The lower cap is entirely missing from this example. We are not sure when or why the red paint was stripped from the head, but there is a deep patina to the bare brass, with some visible stress cracks in spots between the holes.

The shaft is stamped ЯR 510 1940 for 1940 manufacture by subcontractor Wilhelm von Hagen Metallwarenfabrik, Iserlohn Westfalen. There is some material loss with scuffing and chipping across its length.

The combination of the bare brass perforated practice head, removable construction, 1940-dated ЯR 510 shaft, identifiable subcontractor code, missing end cap, incomplete throat hardware, and extensive service wear makes this an especially interesting German WWII training grenade. Its worn and mixed condition reflects the utilitarian nature of reusable practice equipment and gives it strong value as a study and display piece.
