Original Item: Only One Available.This is a very nice original German WWII SS (Schutzstaffel, “Protection Squadron”) cotton Kampfbinde armband, distinguished from the standard NSDAP pattern by the black woven border bands along the upper and lower edges. Particularly interesting is the handwritten souvenir notation on the red field reading “TAKEN IN / GERMANY / OCT 44.” The inscription records that the armband was reportedly taken in Germany in October 1944, although the date at which the handwriting itself was applied cannot be independently established from the inscription alone.

Measuring approximately 7 ¼” x 4 ¼”, the armband is constructed from red cotton with separately applied black woven trim along the upper and lower edges. A white cotton roundel is machine stitched to the center, bearing the black canted swas. emblem. The black border bands are the characteristic feature of the SS version of this type of political armband, and period uniform illustrations show the SS armband worn on the upper left sleeve.

The armband remains sewn into its original sleeve form rather than having been opened flat. The red cotton retains strong color overall, while the white central roundel displays the expected age toning and light scattered soiling. The black woven borders show light wear and some minor loose or pulled stitching, particularly around the upper edge, while the central insignia remains complete and well defined. There are scattered small marks and signs of handling throughout, all consistent with an original piece of cloth insignia of this age.

The SS originated in 1925 as a small protective organization within the NSDAP and was initially tasked with guarding AH and other party leaders. Heinrich Himmler became Reichsführer-SS in 1929 and oversaw the organization’s enormous expansion. After 1934, the SS became organizationally independent of the SA and developed into a complex institution encompassing political security, intelligence, policing, camp administration, racial policy, and eventually armed military formations. SS leadership also played a central role in the persecution and mass murder carried out by the Third Reich.

Uniform insignia was an important means of distinguishing the SS from other NSDAP formations. Period illustrations in the 1937 Organisationsbuch der NSDAP, the official party organizational handbook, depict SS personnel wearing the distinctive red armband on the upper left sleeve. The SS version retained the familiar red field, white roundel, and black swas. of the broader NSDAP design but incorporated black bands along the top and bottom.

Cotton examples such as this were a lighter construction than some of the better-known wool versions. Surviving originals are encountered with several variations in the materials and construction of the central roundel, emblem, and border trim. This example uses a red cotton body with applied black woven edging and a separately attached white center disc, consistent with known period SS cotton armbands.

What makes this particular example especially interesting is the handwritten “TAKEN IN GERMANY OCT 44” notation. October 1944 was a significant point in the Western Allied advance, with American forces fighting on German soil around Aachen and the nearby defensive belt of the Westwall. Aachen surrendered to American forces on October 21, 1944, becoming the first major German city captured by the Western Allies. The notation is therefore consistent with a period in which American troops were actively operating within Germany, though the handwriting itself cannot independently establish the exact circumstances or date of acquisition.
