Original Item: Only One Available. This is a particularly desirable example of the German SS 1st Class Marksmanship Sleeve Diamond, or SS-Schießauszeichnung, Ärmelraute 1. Schießklasse. This pattern originated during the prewar expansion of the SS shooting qualification system, with period documentation placing this style of cloth marksmanship insignia in use by 1937. While the surviving construction and RZM/SS label are fully consistent with examples attributed to the late 1930s, the exact year of manufacture of this individual insignia cannot be established from the badge alone. This is one of the more distinctive early SS proficiency insignia, produced to recognize demonstrated marksmanship ability within the organization's formal shooting qualification system.

The badge is constructed as a black wool diamond with exceptionally attractive silver-colored metal-thread embroidery. At center is the classic circular bullseye target formed from tightly worked concentric rings, accompanied by the finely embroidered oak-leaf motif. The combination of the deep black wool and bright metallic embroidery gives the insignia a striking appearance, while the hand-worked construction represents the quality associated with these pieces.

Especially noteworthy is the reverse, which retains its original-style RZM/SS paper control label. The label remains substantially complete and displays the RZM insignia, SS marking, printed Hersteller information, and additional manufacturing/control markings. Surviving labeled examples of these sleeve diamonds are particularly appealing because the fragile paper tags are readily lost through handling, storage, or wear.

The sleeve diamond remains in very good condition, with the black wool retaining a strong appearance. The silver-colored metal-thread target and oak leaves remain crisp and well defined, with only minor dulling and a few loose fibers. The reverse retains its desirable paper RZM/SS label, showing little toning and wear while remaining clearly legible.

Marksmanship occupied an important place in the increasingly formalized military training undertaken within SS formations during the middle and later 1930s. Qualification systems were used to recognize different levels of shooting proficiency, with the resulting insignia serving as visible evidence that the wearer had attained the prescribed standard.

This example belongs to the 1st Shooting Class, a comparatively high qualification within the system. The design consists of the target together with the oak-leaf embellishment associated with the grade. The type is generally dated to approximately 1937, placing it firmly within the important prewar development and expansion of SS military training.

The piece is also an excellent illustration of period insignia manufacture. Rather than a simple printed or inexpensive woven design, the qualification device was executed in metal-thread embroidery, producing a three-dimensional appearance and considerably finer detail. The surviving RZM/SS label provides another fascinating element. The RZM system regulated the licensed production and distribution of uniform insignia and related organizational equipment, making these labels an important part of the manufacturing history of such pieces. On this example, the label remains attached to the reverse and complements the construction details visible from the front.
