The badge features the German national eagle above a crossed bayonet and stick grenade, surrounded by an oval oak-leaf wreath, with the central eagle bearing the period swas. emblem.

This example is constructed with a solid reverse and openwork design, with a conventional vertical pin attachment. The reverse is unmarked, with no visible manufacturer name or code. Solid-backed zinc General Assault Badges are a recognized wartime construction type and became increasingly common as production shifted toward zinc during the war.

The badge is in good original condition, showing even age and wear throughout. Much of the original silver-colored finish has faded or worn away, leaving a dark gray zinc patina with scattered lighter traces remaining in protected areas. The raised detail remains strong, particularly on the eagle, oak-leaf wreath, bayonet, and stick grenade.

The reverse shows comparable age-related oxidation and finish loss. The barrel-style hinge, vertical pin, and wire catch are all present, and the attachment hardware appears complete. No maker mark is visible.

The Allgemeines Sturmabzeichen was instituted on June 1, 1940, by Generaloberst Walther von Brauchitsch, Commander-in-Chief of the German Army. It was intended to recognize combat participation by soldiers who took part in or directly supported qualifying ground assaults but were not eligible for the Infantry Assault Badge or Panzer Assault Badge. The award was initially associated particularly with pioneer troops before being extended to other supporting combat arms, including artillery, anti-tank, and anti-aircraft personnel when employed in qualifying ground actions.

The design is attributed to Wilhelm Ernst Peekhaus of Berlin. Its distinctive arrangement consists of an oval oak-leaf wreath surrounding a German military eagle and period swas., with a crossed bayonet and stick grenade beneath. The standard badge was worn on the left breast of the uniform and secured by a vertical pin and catch arrangement.

Qualification generally required participation in qualifying assault or combat actions on three separate days by personnel who were otherwise ineligible for the corresponding Infantry or Panzer assault awards. This allowed combat engineers, assault artillery crews, anti-tank personnel, anti-aircraft troops, and other supporting soldiers to receive formal recognition for repeated participation in direct ground combat.

Production methods changed as the war progressed. Early General Assault Badges were produced in hollow form using nickel silver or Tombak, while hollow zinc examples appeared as wartime production increasingly shifted toward less expensive materials. By the later war years, solid and semi-hollow zinc construction became more common. This example’s solid zinc construction and dark gray surface are therefore consistent with the wartime evolution of the badge, though an exact production date should not be assigned solely from its present appearance.

In June 1943, additional numbered versions were authorized for soldiers accumulating substantially larger numbers of qualifying assault days, bearing the numerals 25, 50, 75, or 100. The present badge is the original, unnumbered form of the award rather than one of these later numbered grades.
