Original German WWII Service Worn First Model DAK Afrikakorps Sun Helmet with Badges - dated 1941

Original Item: On first deployment to North Africa in 1941, Afrikakorps infantry were issued with the traditional European sun helmet known as Tropische Kopfbedeckung, of the type known to the British forces as the solar topi (or topee). In the German case, these were made of pith, had prominent ventilation holes in the crown, were khaki in color and bore two metal shields; on the right the national colors and on the left the German eagle. There were several models made, with the first model like this having cotton outer covering made of fabric sewn together.
This particular example is in fair condition, with the main issue being the leather trim and liner. The original khaki cloth covering is intact and worn but retains its original color well with some staining. The helmet band, which hides the attachment rivets for the chin strap and liner, is in good condition but worn. The chin strap is broken in half but retains most of the gray finish. This is definitely an example that saw extensive service, and shows signs of sweat and water, as they were often doused with water to help keep the head cool.
The interior of the helmet still has the original red cotton covering intact, as does the corrugated metal spacer for the lining. The liner itself is in good condition, but the leather has dried out, making it somewhat delicate. The maker abbreviation J.H.S. is embossed into the leather of the sweatband. The underside is marked with size and date 58 - 1941. The red felt inner lining is in good condition with only one small tear near a vent hole. Metal badges are totally genuine and show some wear.
This will make a great addition to any German WW2 Afrikakorps collection.
