Original German WWII Service Worn First Model DAK Afrikakorps Sun Helmet by Helmfavrik W.&F.B.,N. - dated 1941

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. On first deployment to North Africa in 1941, Afrikakorps infantry were issued with the traditional European sun helmet known as Tropische Kopfbedeckung (Tropical headgear), of the type known to the British forces as the solar topi (or topee). In the German case, these were made of pith, had prominent ventilation holes in the crown, were khaki in color and bore two metal shields; on the right the national colors and on the left the German eagle. There were several models made, with the first model like this having cotton outer covering made of fabric panels sewn together.

The pith and fabric construction was lightweight, and permitted ventilation while warding off the sun. Also, it was common for them to be doused in water, as the evaporation effect would cool off the helmet, and therefore the air inside. This however eventually resulted in the helmet becoming soft overall.

This particular example is definitely in well-used condition, and looks to have been soaked in water multiple times, which has resulted in it now being quite soft overall. The inner layer of cork has come apart a bit, and in places feels like it may have shifted around. In spite of this, most parts are still present and intact. The original khaki cloth covering covering, while stained in areas, does not show any tears or major issues. The helmet band, which hides the attachment rivets for the chin strap and liner, is still present and the condition matches the covering, with a few small tears. The chinstrap is present, but in delicate condition, almost torn through near the rivet next to the rectangular ring. The leather trim around the edge is dark green in color, and does show wear and damage, with with some areas missing completely, showing the internal cork structure.

The underside of the brim is the correct khaki canvas matching the exterior, and is in similar condition, though a bit darker in color due to less fading from the sun. The liner itself is in very good condition, showing light wear and no major staining or age related deterioration. It has a lovely natural leather finish on the inside, and the leather is still soft and supple, so it may have been replaced at arsenal at some point. It is somewhat deformed from water exposure, like the rest of the helmet. The liner is embossed by maker HELMFABRIK / W.&F.B.,N., and is stamped 1241 on the other side, for manufacture in December 1941. There is also a very faint size marking by this, which we unfortunately cannot make out. The interior dome of the helmet still has the original red cotton covering intact and in good shape, showing staining and dust from storage and age.

The badges on this example completely original and look to be made from painted zinc with brass prongs on the back. Both now have a dull gray oxidized patina on the unpainted portions, and the paint is very well retained. The tri-color shield is slightly bent, and the eagle shield is missing the bottom brass prong.

A lovely "salty" service used example that will make a great addition to any German WWII Afrikakorps collection. Ready to display!
