Original German WWII Service Worn 2nd Model 1941 dated Afrikakorps DAK Sun Helmet by JHS with Badges - size 59

Item Description

Original Item: On first deployment to North Africa in 1941, Afrikakorps infantry were issued with the traditional European sun helmet known as Tropische Kopfbedeckung (Tropical headgear), of the type known to the British forces as the solar topi (or topee). In the German case, these were made of pith, had prominent ventilation holes in the crown, were khaki in color and bore two metal shields; on the right the national colors and on the left the German eagle. There were several models made, with the first having cotton outer covering made of fabric sewn together. This is the second model, with a felt covering.

This particular example is in good service worn condition, with most parts intact and in nice shape, with overall wear indicative of service in the field. The original olive/khaki felt covering is completely intact, and retains its original color well. It does however have some stains wear to the fuzzy "nap" of the covering. The helmet band, which hides the attachment rivets for the chin strap and liner, is completely missing. The leather trim around the edge is completely present, but close inspection shows it to be a period repair using a hand cut strip of leather. The stitching is by machine, so this was probably done at arsenal. The chin strap is completely missing.

The two badges are intact and look to be made from plated zinc. They are now well patinated, and the silver portions have faded to a lovely tarnished look. The original paint is still well retained on both.

The interior of the helmet still has the original green felt covering intact, with the color now faded, and a lot of wear to the fuzzy "Nap". We cannot tell is this is from service wear or mothing. The liner itself is in good condition, with sweat staining and deterioration from use, and all of the attachment cotter pins are still present. It is embossed with JHS and the underside of the sweatband is marked size 59 with the 1941 date. The red felt inner lining is complete with a nice color, however it has torn an been repaired with red thread.

This is a helmet that was REALLY THERE, seeing service in the field, long enough to have had repairs done at arsenal. Many of these that we see are close to unissued, but this has some real period wear that is impossible to duplicate! This will make a fantastic addition to any German WWII Afrikakorps collection!
