This is a very appealing original German WWII SA Sturmabteilung insignia grouping from SA-Gruppe Hessen, consisting of a right side unit collar tab and an M35 sports shirt insignia. The pairing is especially attractive because the sports patch is directly marked HE, confirming the Hessen regional association and helping identify the otherwise potentially ambiguous navy blue branch color. Together, the two pieces represent both the formal uniform and athletic/training side of the SA, with the collar tab identifying 4. Sturm, Standarte 464 and the sports patch carrying the regional HE designation.

The SA used a detailed system of regional and unit insignia to identify organizational affiliation. Color played an important role in this system, with various SA Groups assigned specific colors for collar tabs and associated uniform details.

The deep navy blue shade known as:

Marineblau

could be associated with more than one SA regional group, including Hansa and Hessen.

In this case, however, the accompanying sports insignia is clearly marked:

Sports and physical training played an important role within German paramilitary and military organizations during the period. Shirts used for training, athletic competitions, recreation, and organized physical conditioning often carried large sewn-on insignia identifying the wearer’s organization or regional formation.

Producing the insignia separately and sewing it to the garment was far more practical than attempting to embroider the shirt itself.

This example shows evidence that it was actually mounted to a shirt.

The surrounding excess material has been cut away, with the edge folded over and stitched.

That construction strongly suggests that it had previously been sewn to a garment rather than remaining unused.

The reverse retains a partial:

although the section containing the specific identification information is now missing.

The patch shows light age toning but no major structural damage.

was the original mass paramilitary organization of the NSDAP and played a major role in the political violence and street intimidation that accompanied the party’s rise during the 1920s and early 1930s.

The organization was widely known as the:

Brownshirts

because of the brown uniform shirt adopted by its members.

The SA provided security at NSDAP rallies, disrupted meetings of political opponents, fought rival paramilitary groups, and participated in intimidation and violence directed against political enemies, trade unionists, Jews, Romani, and others targeted by the regime.

The organization developed a complex hierarchy of ranks, regional groups, standards, and subunits, with many of its rank titles and visual traditions later influencing other party organizations.

The SS itself originally developed within the broader SA structure before becoming a separate and ultimately much more powerful organization.

The SA’s political influence declined dramatically after the purge of 1934, commonly known as the:

Night of the Long Knives

During that purge, many senior SA leaders were arrested and killed, and the organization was stripped of much of its earlier power.

The SA nevertheless continued to exist through the end of WWII, though in a greatly reduced political and military role.

For the collector, this set is particularly attractive because it preserves two different forms of identifiable SA-Gruppe Hessen insignia in one grouping. The IV / 464 unit collar tab, HE sports shirt insignia, original embroidered construction, surviving partial RZM tag, and evidence of actual garment mounting give the set strong period character. The minor moth damage, age toning, and incomplete RZM label are fully disclosed.
