Original German WWII Rural Police Motorcycle Crash Helmet by EREL - Size 57

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice, genuine WWII Rural Police Motorcycle Crash Helmet in brown. It is a molded, smooth, brown leather helmet with raised padded protective bars running horizontally around the helmet's bottom edge, and another one running from front to back over the crown top. Helmet has ventilation grommets with a screen to each side of the crown. These are identical to the "Metropolitan issue", except that they are brown, and not black.

Front center of the helmet features a German WWII Police stylized national eagle, which looks to be silvered aluminum. The eagle is still held in its correct position, and has all of the silvering intact. Helmet has a short brown leather visor stitched to front and stitched on, extended, brown felt lined grained brown leather protective side and rear panels. The side panels on this version have oval ear holes, without any protective flap that could be secured over them, so this may be an early version of the helmet. The rear neck flap is intact, however the leather has deteriorated and torn away around the edge, leaving just the felt lining present. The side panels also have extended straps to bottoms which act as the chinstrap.

Interior of the helmet has a tan leather nine finger liner. Liner is fully intact with all fingers and original tie string, and is faintly marked with size 57. There is also what looks to be the name Herm. Mertens stamped onto the back of the liner. The liner is embossed with the EREL logo and manufacture information in a diamond over BOTH ears:

GES. GESCH.
FABRIKMARKE
EREL
BERLIN
FIBER - HELM

There is also an embroidered fabric label on the top, with the retailer information:

Robert Lubstein
ges. gesch.
EREL
Berlin N.W.91

The design of the helmet is registered with the German trademark office, indicated by the "Ges. Gesch.", which is short for Gesetzlich Geschützt (Protected by Law). EREL is one of the most well known and desirable makers of German caps and leather helmets from the WWII Era.

Very nice service used example of a very hard to find helmet. Ready to display!
