Original German WWII Rural Police Long Dress Bayonet by Carl Eickhorn with Scabbard - Matching Unit Marked

Item Description

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fantastic Rural Police (Gendarmerie) Long Dress "Walking Out" Bayonet by the legendary firm Carl Eickhorn of Solingen. It comes complete with its original nickel fitted brown leather scabbard, and features a beautiful Stag Handle with an inlaid aluminum Civic Police emblem. The nickel alloy pommel is a solid decorated "Birds Head", which does not have a bayonet lug slot or mortise button. both the crossguard of the bayonet and the throat of the scabbard bear matching unit markings of L. Me. 210., which we unfortunately have not been able to identify.

The bayonet has a lovely approximately 33 cm (12.75 inches) long nickel plated steel blade, which was forged "cut-down" style, with the fuller running to the tip. Blade is nice and bright, of excellent quality, with much of the original nickel plating remaining. It shows some runner wear and also polishing near the tip, which may have gone through the plating, but still looks great. The edge is correctly unsharpened.

The rear ricasso of the blade is stamped with the Carl Eickhorn 1934-35 style double oval trademark logo. It features the trademark squirrel looking to the viewer's left over C.E., surrounded by the first oval. Inside the second oval is CARL EICKHORN above and SOLINGEN below, with stars in between. According to J. Anthony Carter's book, GERMAN KNIFE AND SWORD MAKERS, this company was founded in 1865 by Carl Eickhorn, and is arguably the most famous of all Solingen makers. Not only could the family trace their history back 500 years, but they could also demonstrate involvement in the hardening and grinding industries for the same period. Truly the nobility of Solingen Edged weapon dynasties. Eickhorn edged weapons are the most desirable of all makers.

The leather blade buffer washer is unfortunately not present. The bayonet grip scales are made of stag-horn with an aluminum police insignia firmly inset on one side. Interestingly, it looks like there was an extra set of holes on the scales next to the crossguard, which were not used. These are held by nickel rivets between the upswept cross guard decorated with oak leaves, and the stylized eagle’s head pommel. Both cross guard and eagle’s head are well detailed and in very good condition, with almost all of the original nickel plating present.

The scabbard is made of fine brown finished leather, fitted with heavily nickel plated brass alloy, and is in very condition. The fittings have a lovely look, and the leather is still solid, though it has gotten stiff and has wear through the brown finish on a lot of the reverse.

This is a wonderful early war rural police bayonet with scabbard, made by the most famous of all Solingen makers and matching unit marked! Ready to research and display!
